Meta Introduces 'Meta One' Subscription for Anyone Willing to Pay for Extra Features, While the Ads Stay On

For twenty years the bargain was simple. Facebook, then Instagram, then WhatsApp could stay free because the scarce resource was attention and the buyer was an advertiser.

Generative models broke that quiet math.

An extra Story font costs almost nothing to serve. An extra batch of Muse videos does not. Meta Superintelligence Labs spent 2025 and 2026 standing up the Muse family, including Muse Spark for the assistant, Muse Image and Muse Video for media, and a personal Muse agent that Zuckerberg has described as a step toward "personal superintelligence" sitting across the same apps.

Everyday, Meta AI stayed free. The compute did not.

This is why the company named the paid layer that follows from that split: 'Meta One,' an umbrella over app cosmetics, higher AI ceilings, and a creator and business stack that now runs from $2.99 to $499 a month.

Helen Ma, vice president of subscriptions, told reporters and creators in New York that research found people who "want to do more" than a free product built for billions can carry.

She also said the core would stay ad-supported, that paying does not remove ads, that more staff still work on free creator tools than on subscriptions, and that the intent is not to degrade the unpaid product.

Meta One is the brand over plans that were already in the wild.

Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are $3.99. WhatsApp Plus is $2.99. The individual bundles are Core at $7.99 and Premium at $19.99, which is a few dollars under buying all three Plus plans separately at $10.97.

Creator and business tiers start at Essential ($14.99), then Advanced ($49.99), Expert ($149), and Max ($499).

Prices, features, and availability vary by country, app, and account.

Professional tools are per profile, so Instagram and Facebook Advanced on one person is two bills. Meta says more than 50 features are live and that 15 million subscriptions and trials have accumulated during the phased rollout. That number is not 15 million paying customers.

What users buy depends on which stack they are in.

Instagram Plus adds custom DM and Story fonts, notices when chosen people view a Story, and DM previews. Coverage also lists 48-hour Stories on some bundles. Facebook Plus adds Messenger customization, more Reels insights, and super reactions on Reels and Feed. WhatsApp Plus adds themes, icons, effect stickers, and extra pinned chats, with backup storage and Focus Schedules (mute or hide chats on a clock) listed as coming tests.

Core folds those Plus perks together and raises the cap on compute-heavy toys: more Restyle passes on Instagram Stories, more voice effects, more Muse image and video generation.

Premium is the same map with a higher monthly allowance.

Meta declined to publish the exact token or generation limits, saying they can move by country, surface, and load.

In early tests, more than half of bundle subscribers used both AI and expression features, and Restyle plus voice effects were among the reasons people paid. Restyle is not live in every market.

Japan's own newsroom note said it was not available there at announcement.

The professional column is closer to software than to a badge.

Essential is presence and trust: enhanced profile fields (site, locations, reviews), a verified badge and WhatsApp Business channel after verification, impersonation monitoring, a bolder follow button on Reels, automatic follow invites in some descriptions, search ranking language in press writeups, and more Meta Business Agent replies on WhatsApp so a shop can answer around the clock.

Advanced adds the operations layer: Stories scheduled 30 days out, Instagram posts and Reels scheduled up to a year ahead in Mashable’s briefing notes, links in organic posts and Reels, bulk upload, exportable analytics, deeper audience views, teammate access without sharing a password, more linked devices, more WhatsApp broadcast credits, and a larger Agent quota.

Expert and Max raise those quotas and team capacity again. Ma said the tools help people understand audiences and run tasks. She did not promise that a subscription buys distribution.

Boosting and ads remain a separate spend. Meta Verified is the older identity-and-support product. Meta One’s professional tiers absorb verification benefits, so stacking Verified on top is the wrong way to budget the same badge.

The AI story underneath the price list is the part that sits next to Meta’s superintelligence talk. Muse Spark 1.3, shipped days earlier as a closed multimodal reasoner with a 1 million token window, is the lab’s claim that it has closed much of the gap with OpenAI and Anthropic on public indexes.

Muse Image and Muse Video are what Core and Premium meter.

Meta Business Agent is what Essential through Max meter. Edits Plus is next: more cloud storage across devices and extra use of an assistant that reads Instagram insights and proposes ideas.

The newsroom says the same umbrella will later cover Edits itself and AI glasses. Zuckerberg’s recent line that labs training stronger models and then not releasing them is "quite dangerous," and his pitch for a personal Muse agent with a private virtual machine Meta claims it cannot read, is the ideology.

Meta One is the cash register.

Free Meta AI for everyday chat. Paid ceilings for generation, restyling, agents, and glasses when those land.

The company still counts about 3.6 billion daily active people across the family of apps. A subscription that even a small slice of that base keeps is a second revenue line that does not require the feed to carry one more ad.

Whether that stays optional, as Ma insists, is the test. Features that start as extras have a habit of becoming the way serious users work. Links in posts, team seats, 24-hour customer agents, and Muse video from the same composer that already holds the audience are the sort of extras that stop feeling extra once peers have them.

The official mark is the glowing blue 1 on the 15 September newsroom post, not a founder portrait. That is the image Meta put on.
