Software that people open every day tends to change in layers. First it answers a question in a single sitting. Then it starts to keep notes. Then it starts to wait for a time of day, or for a message in another app, or for a tap on a locked phone.
Chatbots followed that same path.
ChatGPT began as a blank conversation that ended when the tab closed. Over the next few years OpenAI added memory, plugins, voice, image generation, and a scheduler that could run work while the user was elsewhere.
The product now sits closer to a personal workspace than to a search box, and the weekly updates have started to look like housekeeping rather than launches.
This time, Adam Fry, who leads consumer product for ChatGPT, posted the latest of those weekly notes.
The items he listed were already rolling out in pieces across the previous days. Official release notes put scheduled tasks for free accounts and event-triggered tasks on 25 August, extra controls for temporary chats on 27 August, and multiple Google accounts on 28 August. Stickers and lock-screen voice widgets arrived around the same window through the mobile apps.
Taken together they do not rewrite ChatGPT. They tighten the parts that people already use.
Scheduled tasks are the clearest example of that pattern.
OpenAI first gave paid users a dedicated Scheduled page in June, after it began retiring Pulse, the older daily briefing tool. A task can run once, on a clock, inside a looser window such as morning or evening, or when something changes in a connected app.
Monitoring jobs are meant to notify only when the model judges a change worth reporting.
Tasks cannot run more than once an hour, and an unattended task may pause after a stretch of inactivity.
Free accounts can now keep up to three active tasks, running once or at most once per day.
Paid plans can go further. Plus and Pro users can attach webhook triggers to Gmail, Slack, and GitHub, so a new email, a channel message, or pull request activity can start a task instead of a calendar slot.
Sharing is also available. A recipient gets an independent copy that uses their own app connections and their own limits. The free tier cannot create those event-triggered jobs. Some users have already asked the company to drop the separate cap on how many tasks an account can hold, arguing that usage metering already exists elsewhere in the product.
Stickers sit at the other end of the same week.
Inside ChatGPT Images, a user can upload one photo or several, describe a style, or transfer a look from another picture. The generator, built on ChatGPT Images 2.0, can return a sheet of stickers with transparent backgrounds in styles such as 3D, hand-drawn, anime, comic, or holographic.
From there the app offers an "Add to chat apps" button. iMessage accepts a single sticker. WhatsApp requires at least three, a rule that comes from Meta rather than from OpenAI. Files can also be saved to the camera roll.
The feature is closer to a messaging habit than to a research tool, which is likely why Fry framed it as something for people who already collect stickers in iMessage.
Temporary chat has been the quieter privacy control in that mix.
By default it stays out of the sidebar, does not write new memories, and is not used to train models. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. The complaint was simple. A scratch conversation sometimes became useful halfway through, and the only options were to lose it or to have started in a regular chat.
Hannah Gao, who works on memory and personalization at OpenAI, described the fix as toggleable personalization, less sidebar clutter, and a way to save a chat once it matters. The setting has to be chosen at the start.
A personalized temporary chat can read existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins, but it still does not create new memories unless the user saves it. Saving turns it into an ordinary conversation.
From that point it follows the account’s usual personalization and model-improvement settings. The Verge noted the same change on 27 August. The old binary between a remembered chat and a disposable one is now a pair of switches rather than a wall.
People who already ask ChatGPT about mail and calendars ran into a different wall.
Many keep a personal Google account and a work account. Until this week the plugin layer treated that as one connection. Paid users on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise can now add more than one Google account for Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts, on web, desktop, iOS, and Android.
Gabriel Chua, a developer experience engineer at OpenAI, posted a short walkthrough for Gmail in ChatGPT and Codex. The point is practical. A question about next week can pull from both calendars in one thread instead of forcing a second login.
The feature is still limited to paid plans.
Voice is the piece that leaves the chat window entirely. Live Activities for ChatGPT Voice on iOS have existed since mid-July, after users turned on background conversations in Voice settings. The new widgets put weather, sports, and similar cards onto that Live Activity, including on a locked screen and in the Dynamic Island. Gavin Nelson, a designer at OpenAI, posted the visual on 24 August.
A later reply put the change in plain terms: the weather card makes a voice session feel less like speaking into an empty channel. The assistant is still running in the background.
The lock screen now shows a fragment of what it is talking about.
None of this is a new model, and none of it removes the older limits.
Free users get a thin slice of scheduling. Google plugins stay behind a paywall. Temporary chats still depend on a choice made at the first message. WhatsApp still wants a pack of three.
What the week does show is how ChatGPT is being shaped around the hours when people are not staring at a prompt box. A task can fire on Thursday. A sticker can leave the app and sit in iMessage. A throwaway thread can be kept after the fact. Two inboxes can answer one question. A locked phone can display the weather while a voice session continues.
The product is accumulating the small surfaces that make a tool feel present without asking for another full conversation.
