Detective By Charlie, An AI That Helps Marketers Snoop The Web

People tend to do a lot of research to ensure that things will go as expected.

Apparently, more than often, people spend too much time sitting down at the computer and work on maintaining and compiling lists, composing pitches or doing hundreds of individual searches.

In short, people are wasting more of their time in researching than doing the thing that matters most: doing business and selling products.

While AI is constantly being referred to as the thing that may eliminate us humans from the surface of the Earth, but in reality, more than often (at least when AI is still young), it is more like a tool to enhance and streamline workflows.

Detective by Charlie is an example, designed to save time when performing browser-based research.

The AI uses natural language processing (NLP) to unearth and collate information about a particular subject in a few seconds by aggregating relevant information from a wide array of sources

For example, Detective by Charlie can run dozens of Google searches with whatever Boolean strings users have indicated. As an AI product, it is aimed at the sales industry.

The company first showcased its minimum viable product at a sales conference. However, the company's CEO Aaron Franzin, said that his technology could work in any industry with lots of repetitive browser-based tasks.

According to Frazin, the idea for Detective came after he saw salespeople in action, noticing that as much of their time was spent researching companies, rather than pitching.

"I was watching a sales rep make a call. Before dialing, they opened up a bunch of browser tabs to do research, from Linkedin, to Salesforce, to the prospects' website. They picked up the phone and made the call - the person didn't pick up so they shut all those tabs, went to the next prospect, opened up those same tabs, made the call and then they just sat there on their computer repeating that all day."

"That's terrible. Does our life really need to be that robotic? No wonder sales reps hate prospecting. No wonder most of us resort to sending generic cold emails and not preparing for calls. After we watched the rep open yet another tab, it hit us - what if your browser could learn to do all that research for you? What if you could teach it everything you do before you pick up the phone and it could do it for you? So we built it."

In an independent research, it was concluded that salespeople spend almost a third of every day researching. So here, Detective is the tool to enable browsers to learn from users' research methods, and perform them automatically.

By having all the research presented to before picking the phone or composing an email pitch is a huge efficiency, which all marketers can benefit.

"We built Detective to automate the research process so you can go into every call meeting or pitch prepared. We built Detective because in 2017 the average human has the attention span of less than a goldfish, it's harder than ever to capture someone's attention. We wanted to do something about it."
