AI assistants have been moving toward becoming broader platforms rather than remaining simple chat interfaces.
Back in 2024, Microsoft described AI as a "generational shift" in technology that it wanted to lead, and that it has spent the past few years building Copilot into Windows, Microsoft 365 and its consumer products.
But that expansion also produced a growing collection of separate experiences and features.
In a dedicated support page, the company says that it is now beginning to simplify that approach as it prepares for a more unified version of Copilot.
Microsoft has started merging its consumer Copilot app with the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, bringing personal and work experiences into a single application.
The rollout began in mid-August and will happen gradually across platforms, with the mobile and web versions moving first and Windows and Mac following later. Microsoft says personal and work data will remain separated even though the experiences are being brought together.
The change reflects a broader realization that people increasingly use AI for both professional and personal tasks.
Keeping separate Copilot applications for those activities created an additional layer of complexity, particularly as Microsoft added more capabilities to both products. The unified application is intended to give users one place to access Copilot while retaining the account and security boundaries required for work data.
The consolidation is also connected to Microsoft's longer-term plan for what it has described as a Copilot "Super App."
The unified application is not itself the Super App, but it provides part of the foundation for a larger product that Microsoft plans to combine with Copilot's coding capabilities, Cowork and new AutoPilot agents.
CEO Satya Nadella said during Microsoft's July 29 earnings call that the Super App is expected this quarter, putting its planned arrival by the end of September.
At the same time, Microsoft is removing several features from the consumer Copilot experience.
Starting August 18, users will lose Copilot Podcasts, Group Chats, Deep Research and Copilot Labs experimental features.
For professional users, Microsoft's Researcher capability will serve as an alternative to Deep Research.
Microsoft is also retiring Mico, the animated character introduced less than a year ago for Copilot's voice conversations.
Mico was designed to give Copilot a more recognizable visual identity, responding to conversations with expressions and animations. Microsoft now plans to move the character to Learn Live, where it says Mico can have a more interactive role.
The decision is notable because Mico represented a different direction for Copilot. Microsoft had been experimenting with making AI interactions feel more conversational and personal, using an animated character rather than presenting the assistant as a largely static interface.
The company says the experience nevertheless provided useful lessons about warmth and expressiveness that will continue to influence Copilot.

Microsoft is becoming more selective about what remains part of Copilot, removing several experimental features while merging its consumer and business Copilot apps into a more unified experience.
The shift marks a move away from rapidly adding new capabilities toward concentrating on features that provide more practical value, particularly productivity, coding, agents and software interaction.
This comes as Microsoft faces competition from increasingly broad AI platforms from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, while trying to make better use of Copilot's existing integration with Windows and Microsoft 365.
The merger is also part of the groundwork for Microsoft's planned Copilot Super App, which could eventually bring chat, coding, computer interaction and AI agents together in a single interface.
For users, the changes mean fewer experimental features and a more consolidated Copilot experience, while Microsoft attempts to turn its many Copilot products into a more coherent platform.
