Microsoft is rolling out an update to Skype that brings redesigned interface for users using Windows 10 and older, Mac and also Linux.
After previewing the interface design for its desktop app back in August 2017, Microsoft is rolling it out to all users, remembering that Skype was once a popular choice for messaging and VoIP.
The redesigned Skype desktop app looks similar to its mobile app, which caught attention back in June.
While many people aren't liking the mobile look and feel, with Skype also having the same design on desktop, Microsoft hopes that people will eventually like it.
But to those who are already liking Skype's 'mainstream' design, this update should make experience across different devices appear seamless.
What's more, Microsoft didn't stop there. With the redesigned interface, the update also brings:
- Chat list to organize contact by time, unread, or status. Users can also pin people or groups.
- A chat media gallery to place all photos, files and links users have shared.
- Support for add-ons like Giphy GIF embeds, and scheduling calendar events from chats.
- Enhanced group calls with drag and drop, emojis, in-call reactions, in-call image sharing and reactions.
- The ability to use '@' to mention users and get their attention in group chats.
- Cloud-based that makes sharing files, photos, and videos easier.
- Message history where data can be stored in the cloud for two years.
- Customizable themes to personalize conversations.
- A night mode for less eye strain when using Skype with dim lights.
- A Stories-style feature.
- Bots such as Scoop, Hipmunk, and more.
- Cross-device functionality so it can work on mobile, desktop, Xbox, smart speakers, and more.
Besides similar looks, the Skype desktop design also has all the same features (with some added ones). But according to Microsoft, the update is specifically tailored with desktop experience in mind.
For instance, chats are up front and center, but users can still do group calls, with real-time screen sharing and photo sharing.
The update arrives automatically to all users using Windows 10 operating system. For users using Mac, Linux or older versions of Windows, they need to turn automatic updates on, or manually download the installer.
