For centuries, the ancient stones of the pyramids have drawn travelers from all over the world. People come looking for wonder, eager to stand in the shadow of monuments built to last forever.
Guided by beliefs in the afterlife, sacred rituals, and absolute power, the pharaohs ordered these massive stone tombs to be built. Although this ancient civilization has been studied for centuries, it still holds many mysteries that continue to captivate the world.
Today, as visitors look up at the giant stone blocks of Giza and ancient burial grounds, they admire both the incredible skill of the builders and the lasting legacy of rulers who built for the gods.
For most travelers, a trip to Egypt is a carefully planned mix of history and sightseeing. However, not everyone comes for the monuments.
Egypt's conservative social norms and strict public morality laws can quickly turn an ordinary tourist trip into a serious legal issue, especially when cameras are involved. Brazilian influencer Mariana Alves, known online as Malévola, and friend Bruna Mercatelli learned this firsthand when they were detained in Alexandria after videos of street interactions spread widely online.
At 22 years old, Malévola had already built a substantial digital following.
Born in São Bernardo do Campo in the greater São Paulo area, Malévola began posting as a child and later adopted the stage name Malévola, a nod to the Disney villain.
As a transgender woman who has spoken openly about transition and gender-affirming procedures, Malévola built an audience with lifestyle and fashion content, "get ready with me" routines, and a sharp, often acidic sense of humor.
Reports put Malévola's Instagram following at roughly 1.4 million, with hundreds of thousands more on TikTok. Malévola had also appeared on Carlinhos Maia’s reality series Rancho do Maia.
In Brazil, Malévola was no stranger to controversy, having been involved in public disputes with other influencers and a high-profile incident involving misgendering at a performance of the musical Wicked.
In August 2026, Malévola was arrested in São Paulo after a nightclub altercation led to charges of bodily injury and contempt of a police officer, which was later resolved with bail.
In other words, Malévola is no stranger to controversies.
This time, however, Malévola faced even more serious legal trouble in Egypt.
During a trip that included stops at iconic sites, Malévola and Bruna visited Alexandria.
At first, they looked like ordinary tourists filled with fascination, but they soon escalated their behavior by recording provocative content on public streets.
Egyptian authorities later described the material as showing sexually suggestive gestures, dancing, and approaches to pedestrians and drivers.
Circulating clips depicted interactions such as kissing and physical contact with men, flashing underwear, alongside commentary celebrating the encounters, all framed in the style typical of the creators' social media output.
The Interior Ministry stated that the pair had been identified from the videos, located in Alexandria, and detained on October 20 after an investigation into obscene displays, sexual insinuations, and harassment.
According to officials, the two acknowledged during questioning that they recorded and posted the footage to increase views. Following their arrest, authorities confiscated their passports.
Malévola shared a video showing the moment they were taken to a police station, after authorities stopped their vehicle during a tour and questioned their gender identity.
Egyptian media coverage heavily highlighted Malévola’s identity as a transgender woman, often using controversial language.
After the Brazilian embassy and local lawyers stepped in, both women were released on bail, paying between 20,000 and 40,000 Egyptian pounds (under 1,000 US dollars) while the public prosecutor continued investigating.
Under Egyptian law, actions labeled as public indecency or violations of public morals can result in one to two years in prison, plus heavy fines.
However, things could have been much worse for Malévola.
Because Egypt does not legally recognize transgender identities, the law strictly relies on the gender listed on official birth documents.
Had Malévola been sentenced to prison or kept in prolonged custody, Malévola faced the real danger of being placed in a men's facility.
In a country where LGBTQ+ individuals receive little to no legal protection, detaining a transgender woman alongside male inmates poses severe safety risks, exposing Malévola to heightened threats of abuse, harassment, and violence behind bars.
While authorities did not publicly specify which exact legal provisions were applied, the episode quickly drew international attention.
It highlighted the sharp contrast between the freewheeling content strategies common among digital creators and the strict expectations of public conduct in conservative destinations.
Throughout the unfolding legal process, media attention remained heavily centered on Malévola rather than Bruna.
While Bruna Mercatelli is also a transgender woman, Malévola was already a high-profile public figure with over a million followers, a background in reality television, and a long track record of viral controversies.
Because the provocative videos were posted to Malévola's channels to drive online engagement, and because Malévola actively shared updates during their initial detention, news outlets naturally treated Malévola as the focal point of the story.
Ultimately, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly modern influencer culture can collide with local legal frameworks and cultural expectations.
While the two were able to secure their release on bail and return home to Brazil, the ordeal highlighted the serious risks digital creators face when producing provocative public content abroad.
For Malévola, whose career has been defined by rapid audience growth and frequent controversies, the arrest in Egypt became Malévola's most dangerous publicity crisis yet, illustrating the fine line between chasing views and navigating complex international laws.
