The scandal that has sent shockwaves through Thailand started unfolding in the early morning of September 10, 2026, when officers from the Crime Suppression Division arrived at Wat Phutthaisawan.
Also referred to as the "Monastery of Buddhist Kingship," the 14th-century royal temple is a highly significant, active royal temple located on the south bank of the Chao Phraya River, just outside the main city island of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Thailand.
They came to arrest the 66-year-old abbot then known as Phra Wachirayan Wi.
What they found were both alarming and a trigger for internet virality.
What they found inside his private quarters went far beyond the financial records they had been investigating for weeks.
Security cameras inside the residence recorded the monk having full sexual intercourse with 47-year-old Punyavee Rungrueang on a wooden table that also served as a dining surface.
The footage that went viral showed the pair engaged in explicit sexual activities, including kissing, oral sex, and both digital and penile penetration of the woman on the table itself.
In the video that involved the table, the pair quickly finished their encounter before the monk's followers entered the room with some food to prepare. The woman later joined them as if nothing has happened.
It's worth noting that clips captured them in the act at multiple points around the quarters, but the table scene became the most widely discussed because it happened in a space meant for meals and daily monastic life.
Those videos did not stay confined to the investigation files.
They leaked almost immediately and exploded across Thai social media.
Within hours, clips and stills were being shared tens of thousands of times on platforms used by ordinary Thais. News channels replayed portions of the footage or described it in graphic detail while commentators and ordinary users posted reactions ranging from shock to dark humor.
The videos were reportedly provided by the followers of the monk, many of whom had grown tired of his behavior. They reportedly said they "could no longer tolerate his behaviour."
In other words, some of his followers were already fed up with his encounters with the woman.
Since the place was already wired with security cameras, they used that fact, and may have added extra hidden angles, to document him and catch him red-handed.
The abbot either ignored the cameras, did not realize they were there, or downplayed how much of the room they actually covered.
As a result, the images of a senior monk in robes having sex on a table inside a historic temple became inescapable online, turning a police raid into a national spectacle overnight.
This was unexpected only in what the cameras showed. The raid itself came because Phra Wachirayan Wi was alleged to have mishandled money.
The financial side of the case had been building since mid-July, when an anonymous complaint first reached police. Investigators later established that the abbot, now known by his lay name Atichote Thanprasert, issued more than twenty unauthorized donation receipts in the temple's name over more than two years.
Investigators pointed to two streams that never entered Wat Phutthaisawan's accounts: about 89 million baht meant for renovations and about 22 million baht from amulet sales.
That core embezzlement figure is usually cited as roughly 92 to 111 million baht, depending on the briefing.
Instead of going into the temple’s books, police say a large portion of the money from Phra Wachirayan Wi's accounts was sent to Punyavee Rungrueang, a single mother who had been bankrupt only a few years earlier.
Tens of millions of baht then circulated through her personal bank accounts each year.
With that money, police say, she acquired houses, a Toyota Fortuner, and substantial savings despite having no conventional job. She had been given permission to run an offerings stall and an online worship service at the temple, which police say helped conceal the transfers.
Both were arrested on the same day.
The monk was defrocked on the spot and is now known by his lay name Atichote Thanprasert. The woman initially denied the financial charges but admitted they were the people in the viral video.
They were remanded without bail and taken to prison while the Anti-Money Laundering Office and other agencies continue tracing the money. Officials have said they expect to identify additional people involved.
The table was later removed from the temple as inauspicious.
Atichote Thanprasert was born November 21, 1959.
He ordained in 1997 at Wat Phutthaisawan and rose to become its abbot, holding a mid-level ecclesiastical rank. He was well-known in amulet-collecting circles as the creator of the popular "Nuea Duang" ("Above Fate" or "Status Elevation") Jatukam Ramathep coin amulets, issued when the temple gained royal status.
These amulets attracted wealthy and influential followers, including reports that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul owned one, according to some local reports.
As for the woman, she is Punyavee Rungrueang (also spelled Punyawee or Punyavee Rungreung), nicknamed Ae or Sika Ae.
She is a 47-year-old single mother of three.
Decades ago she attended a top school and was a cheerleader known for her looks.
She later ran a business selling religious offerings. After her marriage ended, she was declared bankrupt in 2019 (an ex-husband allegedly took around 30 million baht from her) and discharged in 2022.
She began visiting the temple for spiritual support about three years ago and grew close to the abbot.
Police say she received special permission to operate a stall and online proxy-worship service inside the temple.
Despite having no regular job, she later owned two townhouses worth about 4 million baht, a Toyota Fortuner, Rolex watches, and substantial bank deposits.
In all, the police seized about 215 million baht in cash, gold bars, jewelry and land titles from locations linked to the couple.
The case lands in a country already weary of clergy scandals.
Only a year earlier another woman had been accused of recording sexual encounters with multiple senior monks and extorting hundreds of millions of baht. Public trust in parts of the monastic order had already been strained.
This new video, because it was so concrete and so easily shared, intensified the sense that something was broken.
Wat Phutthaisawan itself remains an important historic site with its reclining Buddha and riverside architecture. Tourism officials have insisted visitors can separate one man's actions from the temple's heritage.
Yet the images of the abbot and the woman on that table have already traveled farther and faster than any official statement.
The combination of a respected religious figure, a large sum of missing donation money, and graphic footage captured inside the sacred space itself proved irresistible to social media.
The clips keep circulating even as the legal process moves forward, ensuring the story stays in front of millions of people who might otherwise have ignored another embezzlement allegation.
