In a world where beauty is often defined by narrow standards and physical appearances are judged far too quickly, there are individuals who challenge the status quo, standing as beacons of strength, resilience, and inner beauty.
One such remarkable person is Elizabeth Anne Velásquez, more commonly known as Lizzie Velásquez.
She was dubbed "The World's Ugliest Woman" by the internet, and all the comments that followed were unkind and degrading.
But Lizzie stood up, and instead of fighting against the online bullies, she spread love and compassion.
She has since become a beacon of kindness and a survivor.

When she was born in Texas on March 13, 1989, Lizzie was four weeks premature and weighed only 1.2 kilograms.
She was then diagnosed with a rare congenital condition called Marfanoid–progeroid–lipodystrophy syndrome, non-terminal genetic disorder that medically prevents her from gaining body fat.
She has never weighed more than 29 kilograms, and reportedly has almost 0% body fat.
This rare condition affects her appearance.
That is not all, because Lizzie is also blind in her right eye, which she said began to cloud over since she was four. And in her left eye, she is vision-impaired.
Because of this, life has never been too kind to her, as Lizzie is often a target of bullying at school and beyond, as well as from the society who understand her differences.
But nothing she experienced was as heartbreaking as the moment in 2006, when 17-year-old Lizzie discovered a video online that called her "The World's Ugliest Woman."
That, alone, should be enough to shatter anyone's heart, and kill anyone's spirt.
Cyberbullies can be unforgiving, and that there are a lot of people who couldn't survive after facing them.
In an interview with Allure, a grown up Lizzie recalled how she scrolled down the comment section to find at least someone who shows at least a bit of compassion.
"I was 17, and I found the video on YouTube calling me 'the world's ugliest woman' and knew that over 4 million people had seen it," she said.
"There were thousands of comments on this video, and I just sat there and scroll through every single one and read every single one, because I was so desperate to find one person that was standing up for me."
"And I never found it."
At the time, her mother was nearby, watching TV.
Lizzie thought to herself, if the video crushed her, nothing could compare to the pain her mother would feel.
But instead of mourning to her condition and fall to her sorrows, Lizzie's response was far from what the bullies expected.
Rather than letting the cruelty of others define her, Lizzie took control of her narrative.
She decided that her life's purpose would not be dictated by her appearance but by her actions and her words.
Lizzie Velásquez transformed her pain into an incredible source of strength, becoming a motivational speaker, author, an activist, and a YouTuber.
Her message is one of self-love, confidence, and determination. She challenges the idea of conventional beauty and emphasizes the importance of kindness, empathy, and inner strength. In her words, "You are the one who decides what defines you."
Lizzie's public speaking career began in college when she was asked to share her story with a group of students.
Since then, she has traveled the world, speaking to audiences of all ages about her experiences and the importance of embracing individuality. Her TEDx talk, "How Do You Define Yourself?" went viral and has been viewed millions of times, touching hearts across the globe.
Through her speeches, Lizzie encourages people to rise above adversity, reminding them that they are capable of achieving greatness regardless of the challenges they face. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact of positive thinking.
In addition to her work as a speaker, Lizzie has authored several books. These works delve into her personal journey and offer readers inspiration on how to face life’s difficulties with grace and courage.
In 2015, a documentary about her life, titled "A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story", was released. The film chronicles her experiences of bullying, her rise to become a motivational speaker, and her fight against online cruelty. It’s a powerful portrayal of how one woman took control of her narrative and used her platform to create positive change.
Ever since, The eldest of three children born to Rita and Guadalupe Velásquez has become a strong advocate for anti-bullying efforts.
She uses her platform to raise awareness of the dangers of online harassment and to promote kindness in the digital space. Her activism has sparked conversations on the global stage about how we treat others, especially those who may not fit into society's narrow definitions of normalcy.
Lizzie Velásquez’s story is one of transformation.
From a young girl who faced unimaginable cruelty to a global advocate for kindness and acceptance, Lizzie has shown the world that true beauty lies within. Her life serves as a powerful reminder that no matter what obstacles we face, we have the power to define our own worth.
For anyone struggling with self-acceptance, bullying, or adversity, Lizzie’s story is a beacon of hope.
Lizzie Velásquez is a rare example of a survivor of bullying, who didn't only survived the cruelty of the internet, but become a warrior of kindness, a fighter for compassion, and a champion of inner strength.
She reminds everyone that people can be anything. But being kind is what truly makes a difference.
