The internet is growing big, and nothing is able to stop it. With more people and companies rely on the technology, there should be a continuous improvement to ensure that the technology can benefit everyone involved.
And this is what the 'Modern Computing Alliance' aims for.
Founded by some of the world's tech giants that include Google, Dell, Intel Box, Cirtrix, Imprivata, Okta, RingCentral, Slack, VMWare, and Zoom, the consortium of these companies want to tackle joint problems around security, remote work, and other enterprise issues that have only become more important during the 'COVID-19' coronavirus pandemic.
The Modern Computing Alliance will initially be focused on four areas: performance; security and identity; remote work, productivity, and collaboration; and health care.
The goal here is to combine their knowledge and resources in order to solve shared problems around how companies perform work in the cloud and the IT tools they use.
According to John Solomon, VP for Chrome OS, in a blog post:
With the mission to "drive ‘silicon-to-cloud’ innovation for the benefit of enterprise customers—fueling a differentiated modern computing platform and providing additional choice for integrated business solutions," the alliance focuses on developing new standards and interoperable technologies that can be used by any company that relies on one of the partners’ platforms or products.
In particular, Google is engaged in the effort with its Chrome browser and Chrome OS teams, as well as the division responsible for Google Workplace.
The Modern Computing Alliance actually predates the coronavirus pandemic. It started during discussions at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 2019.
But starting March 2020, the pandemic that plagued the world and crippled many companies has forced transitioning of office work to remote work.
This is why the consortium decided that it needed to expand its scope and bring in even more partners, like Slack and Zoom, that were witnessing increase in usage.
