A group of hackers and criminals from Eastern Europe have stolen over 12 million Baht (about $350,000) from a total of 21 ATMs in Bangkok and other five provinces by hacking a Thai bank's ATM network. The Central Bank of Thailand (BoT) has issued a warning to all commercial banks about security flaws.
About 10,000 ATMs in the country were already exploited.
The warning came only a while after the state-owned Government Savings Bank (GSB) shut down approximately 3,000 of their ATMs following an ongoing police investigation into the recent hack in which hackers were able to infect many of the machines with malware.
GSB found that millions of Thailand Baht were stolen in the course of one week across provinces of Bangkok, Phuket, Chumphon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, and Surat Thani.
What the hackers did was inserting cards installed with malware into multiple ATMs to spew out cash, up to 40,000 Baht each transaction.
The crime was said to bee linked to the multiple attacks on Taiwan's ATMs in July.
