Skybox Imaging is a company that builds satellites and deploys data centers. It also records and provides access to detailed imagery and high-definition video of landscapes. Google acquires Skybox for $500 million in cash to further enhance its quest to deliver information far from earth. For the search giant, acquiring Skybox isn't just for business, it's for data and information.
The move by Google, adding to the previous ones like Titan Aerospace, is the company's strategy to collect and provide data from the sky. Skybox has designed small and relatively cheap satellites that can collect daily photos and video of the Earth. In its short term goal, Google has said it would use Skybox's images to improve the search company's maps.
